How can I recognise STI’s
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs, sometimes called sexually transmitted diseases) can have various symptoms. For symptoms and other information on sexually transmitted infections see:
Make an appointment with your GP
Please make an appointment with your GP to discuss if you suspect you have an STI. Together you can determine which tests you should have, as this depends on your signs, symptoms and your risk. Don’t hesitate to ask our help, we much rather have you come in than possibly spread a STI.
Testing for STI
Tests can best be done after three weeks
Unless you have symptoms, it is best to wait for about three weeks after risk of infection to do a test. Otherwise the test may indicate negative when in fact you may be infected.
Doing a test for sexually transmitted infections is fairly simple. You can do home tests for the most common STIs, but in some cases you need a blood test.
Tests you can do at home are:
- Chlamydia
- Gonorrhea
- Trichomoniasis
- Mycoplasma genitalium
Blood tests are required for:
Costs
Costs of STI tests
A home test for chlamydia, gonorrhoea, trichomoniasis or mycoplasma genitalium will cost you about 40 to 50 euro each.
Blood tests for syphilis, HIV or hepatitis B are about 30 euro per test. If the tests are positive they can cost you more, especially the syphilis test.
All prices are indications. For the exact costs please visit Certe (Dutch only). Go to "Tarieven Medische microbiologie" and look under SOA (meaning STI in Dutch). Note that there is an additional charge for each test for either the swab or having your blood taken. That is about 18 euro more than the prices indicated at Certe.
