Mental health problems

Feeling down, having relationship problems or are worried?
It can help to:

  • sleep and get up at fixed times, go outside, eat healthy;
  • exercise every day;
  • have regular contact with other people.

If you have mental health symptoms, you can discuss this with your GP. For example feeling down, relationship problems or problems related to alcohol or drugs. Your GP can also help you deal with psychological problems related to moving countries, such as loneliness.
If necessary, the GP can ask the mental health counselor (in Dutch: 'praktijkondersteuner GGZ' or 'POH-GGZ') to help you.

Mental Health Counselor

The mental health counselor can help to define your problems and by arranging short-term treatment. The mental health practice nurse will regularly discuss how things are going with your GP.

Psychologist or psychiatrist

If necessary, the GP will refer you to a psychologist or psychiatrist. For a referral a psychiatric diagnosis is necessary, for example depression or an anxiety disorder. Choose a psychologist or psychiatrist that you feel comfortable with.

Cost

Without Dutch Health Insurance

If you are NOT insured in the Netherlands, you have to pay for services at our practice or any other health provider.

With Dutch Health insurance

If you have a Dutch health insurance, the costs for a psychologist or psychiatrist will be at the expense of your “own risk”. If you have spent your own risk in a given year, it won’t cost you anything.
